On 8 February 2017 IDEAS’ celebrated its 7th anniversary in conjunction with the 114th  birthday of our first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. Our Anniversary dinner with the theme Night at the Musicals, was a grand success and we thank everyone who made our night by attending and supporting our anniversary.

We kicked off the night with a welcome address by our COO Tricia Yeoh. This was followed by a mesmerising Gamelan Performance by Gamelan Slendro from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The event also gave us an opportunity to present our report on IDEAS’ work in 2016. Our Chief Executive, Wan Saiful Wan Jan was proud to announce the future of IDEAS to be no longer about being a “youthful organisation” but an organisation of “experts”. The night itself showed how IDEAS is expanding and growing, and we are excited about the next stage of our development. To learn more read his presentation here.

Our very own Founding President Tunku Zain Al-‘Abidin Tuanku Muhriz presented the President’s Speech, which brought back an IDEAS tradition of having the President give the keynote address. Tunku Abidin spoke on the rise of populism, seen in Brexit and Trump’s election, and why we must maintain our commitment to classical liberal ideals in order to counteract these sentiments. Tunku Abidin also spoke about the importance of youth and made a case for Transformasi Nasional 50 initiative (TN50) highlighting how it needs to be an inclusive platform for all Malaysians. He ended with a quote from Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman, “If we pull together and work together with the maximum of goodwill and harmony, there is no limit to what our people can achieve in the years to come.” Read his full speech here.

The night concluded with a spectacular performance from Stephanie Van Driesen and Nick Choo, who helped end the night on a high.

Once again, we would like to thank all those who supported us, whether they were there on the night or there in spirit.
