Calls for New Discourse on National Unity
Kuala Lumpur, 16 September 2015 – Twenty young Malaysians have signed a declaration pledging to strengthen the state of national unity in our nation. The IDEAS National Unity Youth Fellows believe that this is an appropriate time to reopen the discussion on the levels of cohesion in our society and its impact on our progress as a nation given recent events involving racial and religious matters.
This declaration was signed by the Fellows and officiated by YAM Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh bin Tengku MohdHamzah at the National Unity Conference. The conference entitled “Nation-Building, Unity and the Malaysian Dream: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” was held at Institut Integriti Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Organized by the Fellows alongside the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) and Merdeka Center for Opinion Research, the conference aimed at raising awareness and encouraging discourse on the topic of national unity.
The declaration calls for a reaffirmation of our national identity, better governance and the preservation of civil liberties. The Fellows have pledged to conduct activities that advocate for greater national unity, constitutional literacy as well as responsible media consumption and media literacy. In addition to that, the Fellows will support in solidarity and materially, initiatives and movements that seek to enhance national unity moving forward.
