Sacking of the Attorney General at this time is unacceptable

Kuala Lumpur, 28 July 2015 – Following the sacking of Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail, Chief Executive of IDEAS Wan Saiful Wan Jan issued the following statement:

“I am shocked to hear that Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail’s service as the Attorney General has been terminated abruptly yesterday. To terminate his service in the middle of an ongoing investigation involving the Prime Minister raises a lot of questions about the intention behind this sacking.”

“I acknowledge the potential conflict of interest in the role of Attorney General and Public Prosecutor. But that should be resolved by reforming the system, not by sacking the Attorney General. Tan Sri Gani’s service was supposed to end in October anyway so there is no reason for this early sacking. People are already talking about a potential desperate conspiracy by the Prime Minister to stay in office. This action unfortunately strengthens the conspiracy theory and further weakens the moral authority if Najib to stay in office.”

“The sacking of Gani does not solve any problem. Instead, it raises even more questions. I am now worried if other members of the special taskforce investigating 1MDB would be put under pressure by the top. And would critical cabinet members be sacked too?”
